Every October, the U.S. Department of Labor observes National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), a nationwide observance that recognizes the contributions of workers with disabilities and highlights the importance of inclusive hiring and employment practices. The Department of Labor’s theme for 2026 is “Celebrating Value and Talent,” which underscores the skills and perspectives that employees with disabilities bring to their workplaces.
What NDEAM Recognizes
NDEAM traces its roots back to 1945, when Congress established a week to recognize the employment needs and contributions of people with disabilities. Over time, that observance grew into a full month, reflecting a broader, ongoing effort to promote equitable hiring practices and workplace inclusion across industries nationwide.
Each year, the Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy selects a theme intended to guide the conversation around the observance. The 2026 theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” is meant to draw attention to the skills, experience, and unique perspectives that employees with disabilities contribute across every industry, rather than framing disability employment primarily around accommodation or compliance.
Building Inclusive Benefits and Workplace Practices
For many employers, NDEAM is a useful prompt to look at their workplace practices with a fresh eye, not just around hiring, but around the everyday employee experience. A few areas worth considering include:
- Accessible communication, such as ensuring benefits materials, open enrollment resources, and internal communications are available in accessible formats.
- Reasonable accommodations, including flexible scheduling, assistive technology, or physical workspace adjustments where appropriate.
- Inclusive benefits design, such as making sure group health, disability, and other benefits are clearly explained and genuinely accessible to all employees.
- Employee resource groups, which can provide a space for employees with disabilities and their allies to connect and share feedback.
Recognizing Contributions Across the Workforce
NDEAM is also an opportunity for employers to recognize the contributions of employees with disabilities within their own organization, whether through internal recognition programs, team spotlights, or simply making space for these conversations during team meetings. Framing this observance around value and contribution, consistent with this year’s theme, can help shift the conversation away from viewing disability solely through the lens of accommodation and toward a broader appreciation of the talent already present in the workplace.
Why Benefits Communication Matters
Group benefits packages, including health insurance, disability coverage, and other voluntary benefits, are only useful to employees who understand them and can access the information easily. Reviewing whether your benefits communications, enrollment platforms, and related materials are accessible to all employees is a practical step that supports the broader goals of NDEAM.
Practical Steps Employers Can Take This October
- Share information about NDEAM and its 2026 theme with your team.
- Review job postings and hiring practices for inclusive language and accessible application processes.
- Check whether your workplace facilities and digital tools meet accessibility standards.
- Ask employees, through anonymous feedback channels if helpful, whether current benefits and accommodations are meeting their needs.
A Month-Long Reminder With Year-Round Relevance
While NDEAM is observed each October, the practices it highlights, inclusive hiring, accessible communication, and thoughtful benefits design, are relevant throughout the year. Treating this month as a starting point for ongoing review, rather than a one-time checklist, can help build a more genuinely inclusive workplace over time.
